Authorities announced on Friday that a 25-year-old man opened fire at a Walmart store in Indiana, where he had previously worked, hurting at least one person before police officers shot and killed him.
Anna Gray, a member of the Evansville Police Department, was the one who made the identification of the shooter as Ronald Ray Mosley II. She stated that Mosley had worked at the store in the city in southwest Indiana at one point.
Officer Taylor Merriss reported on Friday that a female employee was injured when Mosley opened its doors on Thursday evening.
The name of the victim, her age, and the severity of her injuries was not immediately made public by the police. Despite this, Merriss stated that she “was able to talk when she has transported away from the scene,” as the Evansville Courier & Press reported.
According to authorities, a complaint of an active shooter in the store was made at approximately 10 p.m. on Thursday, and officers from the Vanderburgh County sheriff’s office and the Evansville police department responded.
According to Merriss, customers and staff attempted to hide or flee before authorities came and entered the business to seek for the shooter as he prowled around the store looking for targets.
“Several officers were searching for the suspect. And he could come around the corner at any time,” Merriss added, describing how “eerie” the footage from the body camera was.
Gary stated that throughout the incident, other members of police enforcement returned fire, which ultimately resulted in the gunman’s death.
“When authorities walked inside, they were trying to locate the offender, and he was spread out across the business. He would fire at the officers and then run away. Therefore, it wasn’t confined to a single location within,” she explained.
Gray stated that the police did not immediately know how many persons, other than the woman employee Mosely had been shot at, noting that there could be further victims who fled the scene. In addition, Gray stated that the woman employee was the only person Mosely shot at.
The authorities requested that anyone who fled the area with any injury, regardless of the minor, get in touch with emergency medical personnel.
According to a report by a local broadcaster, Walmart stated on behalf of the company in which they said, “The entire Walmart family is stunned by the terrible violence that occurred at our Evansville store, and our sympathies are with our associate at this time.” When we have more information, we will do everything in our power to support our colleagues as they deal with the aftermath of this tragedy.
The Associated Press inquired about Walmart’s position by emailing the company.
In a tweet, the city’s police department said they were preparing for a news conference on Friday.
Evansville is a city on the Ohio River with a population of about 116,000 people and is approximately 172 miles (or 276 kilometers) to the southwest of Indianapolis.
In November, a Walmart manager in Chesapeake, Virginia, killed six people when he randomly shot inside a break room before a regular company meeting. This occurred two days before Thanksgiving when the holiday is traditionally observed. In addition, six people were injured. Before police officers could arrive, the shooter took his own life with a gun.
